Julia Flanagan represents former teach acquitted of rape of a teenage girl.

Julia Flanagan successfully represented a former teacher accused of raping and indecently assaulting a teenaged girl.

The case was made particularly difficult for the defence by the admission before the jury of evidence of the defendant’s recent conviction for rape and voyeurism and a previous acquittal for rape.

The prosecution called evidence from a friend of the complainant and medical evidence to support the allegations.

The defendant denied that he had ever had any sexual contact with the complainant at all.

The defence solicitors Scott Bowen and Georgia Wellings were able to gather background material which Julia used to show the jury that the complainant’s description of the location could not be correct and to demonstrate in cross-examination the tenuous nature of the allegations and the possibility that the complainant’s account was contaminated by publicity concerning the rape conviction.

The jury was persuaded not to be unduly prejudiced by what they had heard about the defendant’s background unanimously acquitted him.

Julia was privately instructed by Scott Bowen of Blackfords LLP and assisted at trial by Scott Bowen and Georgia Wellings.
