Julia Flanagan secures acquittal for businesswoman accused of assaulting a police officer.
11 April 2025
Julia Flanagan was privately instructed to represent a businesswoman from a high-profile family, charged with assault on an emergency worker. The defendant was accused of drunkenly assaulting a male police officer after a traffic stop on her late-night journey home. The assault was seemingly captured on the body worn video of 2 police officers. Julia was able to persuade the court to admit the evidence of a police expert in policing policy and procedure. Using this evidence for cross-examination, Julia demonstrated that the defendant had herself been the victim of inappropriate use of force by the police officer and had suffered a number of unacceptable failings throughout the prosecution. The judge acceded to a half time submission and directed the jury to find the defendant not guilty.
Julia was instructed by Jennifer Richardson, partner at Blackfords LLP and was assisted at trial by Samantha Christien.
