Oliver Renton, led by Felicity Gerry QC, secures acquittal in multiple-defendant murder trial.

24 November 2020

Oliver Renton, part of Crucible's Serious Crime team, led by Felicity Gerry QC and instructed by Graham Wilkinson of Sperrin Law secured acquittals in respect of murder and manslaughter for the first defendant on a four handed murder trial before Preston Crown Court.

The trial stemmed from a pair of stabbings, one day apart, of young men in Blackpool. Oliver's client was convicted of only a single count of robbery, flowing from a violent incident the day before the killing. Two other defendants were convicted of manslaughter, one of these also being found guilty of robbery.

The case involved consideration of the post-Jogee landscape of common purpose as against accessorial liability for secondary parties. Of particular interest, the court was persuaded to leave to the jury the defence of overwhelming supervening act.
